Thorin is a character from The Hobbit, written by J. R. R. R. Tolkien. He is a dwarf of the lineage of Durin, son of Thráin II and grandson of Thrór, the last king under the Mountain before the attack of the dragon Smaug. Thorin leads a company of twelve dwarves and a hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, to recover the treasure and kingdom of Erebor. He is known as Thorin the Oak Shield, because in one battle he used an oak branch as a shield. He is brave, proud and ambitious, but also loyal and honourable. He dies in the Battle of the Five Armies, defending the Lonely Mountain from orcs and goblins.
